A young man named Oluga Abiola has taken to social media to share his horrible experience after being unlawfully arrested and wrongly labeled a cultist in various news publications
The incident occurred when he, a Mathematics graduate from the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, was standing in front of his father’s house on Sunday, February 4, 2023, and witnessed police officers arresting young men in his neighborhood.
he recounted that while he was chatting with a friend on his phone, one of the officers falsely accused him of recording the raid and promptly arrested him.
He was then taken to Ibarra Police Station in Ogun State, where he was detained for three days without the opportunity for bail.
Adding further insult, the Ogun Police Command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO) published his name in national newspapers, branding him a suspected cultist without conducting any investigation.
During his detention, he faced threats from the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the Ibarra division, who promised to make his life unbearable.
he asserted that he was simply a recent graduate awaiting the commencement of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and had no involvement with cult groups.
In response to the injustice he suffered, he took to social media, calling on the Inspector General of Police and the Governor of Ogun State to intervene.
He emphasized the urgent need to expose the misconduct of the Ogun State Police Force, speaking on their harassment and defamation tactics.
His family is seeking legal representation to pursue justice, with a public apology in national newspapers deemed necessary to rectify the damage done to his reputation.
This incident has sparked outrage online, with Nigerians condemning the police for wrongfully arresting innocent individuals and branding them as criminals.
