For how long have you been an artiste?
I have been pursuing my passion for music for about six years now, dedicating myself to honing my craft and evolving as an artiste.
Did you always know you could sing well?
Yes, I did. I discovered my passion for singing at a young age. Again, my dad was also a musician during his time. So, it was easy for me; it is something that runs in the family.
At what point did you realise you wanted to pursue a career in music?
I realised I could pursue music professionally after school because my mum was particular about finishing school and getting a degree before I pursued my music professionally. I used that period to hone my skills, and I feel very confident in my abilities. It was easy to turn my potential into a career because of my strong foundation.
Have your parents always been in support of your career choice?
Yes, I shared my aspirations with my parents, and fortunately, they were incredibly supportive from the very beginning. The encouragement they gave boosted my confidence to pursue my dreams.
What does music mean to you?
Music is my outlet for self-expression and creativity. It’s a powerful medium through which I can connect with others, evoke emotions, and share meaningful stories.
Which song would you say made you popular?
My new song, ‘Sneakers’ is huge and currently giving me a lot of attention. It played a significant role in making me gain popularity, as it resonated with audiences and garnered widespread acclaim.
How has your background as an Isoko man from Delta State influenced your work?
My upbringing in Delta State has deeply influenced my music, infusing it with elements of my cultural heritage and personal experiences. It’s a source of inspiration that shapes my artistic expression.
How did you come about the stage name, Gnewzy?
The stage name, Gnewzy, is derived from my birth name, Emuemu Goodnews. It’s just a short form of Goodnews.
Does vocal training play any role for a music artiste?
Vocal training plays a crucial role in my singing, helping me refine my vocal technique, expand my range, and maintain my vocal health. It enables me to deliver polished performances and connect with audiences on a deeper level.
How do you handle female fan attraction when they come?
I appreciate the support and admiration of all my fans, regardless of gender. I strive to maintain professionalism and gratitude in all interactions, focusing on creating meaningful connections through my music.
What doors will you say stardom has opened for you?
Stardom has opened doors to incredible opportunities, including collaborations with talented artists, performances on prestigious stages, and access to a global audience. It has allowed me to share my music with the world in ways I never imagined.
Has stardom deprived you of any of your hobbies?
Not really. Apart from music, I like to dance. I also love to play and watch football. I still find time to sneak in for a few games when I can.
What projects are you working on?
For now, we (my team) are releasing a few more singles to get the audience to truly know and understand my kind of sound. I’m sure it’ll all culminate into an EP at some point, but for now, it’s just singles, and more singles and music videos.
What is your advice to up-and-coming artistes like you climbing the ladder?
My advice to younger artists is to stay true to themselves, believe in their talent, and never give up on their dreams. Success in the music industry requires dedication, resilience, and a willingness to learn and grow. Embrace every opportunity, learn from setbacks, and stay focused on your passion.
