The Lagos State Government has concluded plans to collaborate with stakeholders to achieve Zero-Carbon Lagos by 2055.
This was disclosed on Tuesday in Lagos during the inaugural stakeholders meeting organised by the Special Adviser on Climate Change and Circular Economy to the Lagos State Governor, Titilayo Oshodi.
Speaking during the event, the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who was represented at the event by the state Commissioner, Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget, Mosopefolu George, said climate change and the need for a circular economy was key as they are present realities that demand immediate and decisive action.
The PUNCH in August, reported that Sanwo-Olu said the challenges posed by climate change should be tackled in partnership with donor organisations to cut across the waste, transportation, and energy sectors.
Sanwo-Olu noted that Lagos was not immune to these challenges, “because we are a coastal city and one of the most immediate impacts of climate change is sea-level rise, we are witnessing the increasing impacts of climate change, from extreme weather events to resource scarcity and pollution.”
He said that the state has the opportunity to address these challenges and unlock a more sustainable and prosperous future for Lagos.
The state governor added that by embracing a circular economy, the state can move away from the traditional ‘take-make-dispose’ model to a system that maximises resource efficiency minimises waste, and promotes environmental responsibility.”
“However, this inaugural stakeholders’ session is a testament to our recognition of the need for collective action to achieve the desired outcome.
“By working together, we can unlock the immense potential of the circular economy, create a more resilient and competitive city, and ensure a brighter future for generations to come,” he added.
