The communities of Okuama in the Ughelli South Local Government Area and Okolaba in the Bomadi Local Government Area of Delta State were thrown into chaos on Friday as soldiers descended upon the area, setting houses ablaze in retaliation for the brutal killing of 16 soldiers, including senior officers. The soldiers took over the area, forcing many residents to flee for their lives.
It is absolutely appalling that Nigerian universities are still plagued by strikes and unpaid salaries. How does it seem that we continue to get everything wrong in the country, especially when it comes to education? I thought we had moved past this point of incompetence and neglect. The National President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero, has criticized the Federal Government for its failure to pay the four months’ withheld salaries of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational Associated Institutions.
