According to local media, Mapisa-Nqakula handed herself over to the Pretoria Central Police on Friday morning and is anticipated to make a court appearance later in the day.
Allegations were made against her for allegedly seeking bribes in exchange for granting contracts during her tenure as defence minister.
According to AFP, Mapisa-Nqakula, during her tenure as defence minister from 2014 to 2021 before becoming speaker, allegedly solicited 2.3 million rand ($121,000) in bribes from a former military contractor.
BBC reports that it is unclear whether or not she is under arrest.
On Thursday, she announced that she was taking special leave from her role due to the seriousness of the allegations.
“Given the seriousness of the allegations and the attendant extensive media speculation, I have decided to take special leave… effective immediately,” she said in a statement on Thursday.
According to reports, last week, an elite police unit conducted a thorough five-hour search of Ms Mapisa-Nqakula’s Johannesburg home.
