The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh confirmed the development in a WhatsApp message on Tuesday following an inquiry by our correspondent.
In a viral video posted on X, on Tuesday, some armed men were seen butchering a lone young man and smashing a bus designed with the pictures of a factional NANS leader and a former presidential candidate of the association, Chibuzor Obi, at Zone 8, Abuja.
Reacting to the development, the FCT PPRO, SP Adeh, said the police were ensuring that there is no disruption of peace being enjoyed by residents of the territory while promising to communicate further development.
Adeh noted, “The FCT police command is aware of the news making rounds about the recent attacks and counterattacks launched by the factional NANS leaders against one another in the Federal Capital Territory and therefore wishes to state that the police command has commenced an investigation into the matter.
“The command is ensuring no disruption of peace being enjoyed by residents is allowed. Further development would be communicated.”
Both the substantive NANS president, Lucky Emenike, and the factional president, Chinazor Obi, could not be reached for comments on Tuesday, as phone calls and text messages by our correspondent were not responded to.
Also, the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi did not respond to calls and text messages by our correspondent.
Meanwhile, The PUNCH had on December 1 and 2, 2023, reported how a NANS faction stormed the National Hospital, Abuja on Friday, December 1, to attack two injured members of another faction who were undergoing treatment following injuries sustained during an earlier clash between the factions.
Saturday PUNCH reported that several patients were forced to flee their hospital wards and beds following the violent attack by the NANS factions.
Police officers, however, intervened by manning the National Hospital, and dispersing the rioters, in a bid to restore law and order.
Following the attack on the National Hospital on Friday, December 1, 2023, the major roads leading to the Abuja International Conference Center and the National Hospital were deserted, while the police condoned off some sections of the highway.
When the National Hospital was contacted over the development in December, the spokesperson, Dr Tayo Haastrup, confirmed the attack on the hospital while noting that the intruders aimed to attack the injured fractional members undergoing treatment.
