The Director, Army Public Relations, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday.
The statement read, “Acting on credible intelligence on the activities of the terrorists, troops conducted a targeted clearance operation to dismantle the suspected terrorists’ operational base in the town of Maru.
“In a fierce gun battle with the terrorists, the gallant troops neutralised 12 of the terrorists, compelling the others to flee.
“The troops destroyed the terrorists’ base after dislodging them.”
According to the statement, weapons recovered include one AK-47 rifle, one magazine, 12 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, and two locally fabricated guns.
Ten motorcycles and 18 rustled cows were also said to have been recovered.
The statement further reiterated the commitment of the Nigerian Army to fight terrorism and insurgency.
It added, “The successful operation is a testament to the dedication of our troops in the fight against terrorism and insurgency.
“The Nigerian Army remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of our citizens and will continue to take decisive action to curb terrorists’ activities in the region.”
PUNCH reported last Tuesday how troops raided and destroyed the hideout of a terrorist kingpin, Yellow Janbros, in Zamfara State.
