The Advocates For Children And Vulnerable Persons Network (ACVPN) has launched a scathing attack on the Lagos State Ministry Of Youth And Social Development (Child Protection Unit) for its alleged failure to provide shelter to a serially sexually abused minor.
The ACVPN’s outcry comes in response to the Ministry’s refusal to act in the best interest of the victim, sparking widespread concern among stakeholders.
The case, which involves distressing allegations of sexual defilement and forced abortions inflicted upon a minor by her guardian and accomplices, was reported to the Nigeria Police Force by ACVPN on April 8th, 2024. Swift action by law enforcement led to the immediate apprehension of the perpetrators, yet the Ministry’s Child Protection Unit reportedly hindered efforts to secure a safe shelter for the victim.
According to Ms. Jennifer Nwosu, ACVPN’s Case Manager, the organisation encountered bureaucratic obstacles when attempting to provide necessary documentation to facilitate the minor’s placement in a protective shelter. Despite their persistent efforts, officials demanded additional paperwork and failed to act promptly, citing procedural issues.
ACVPN has called upon the Commissioner of the Ministry and the Permanent Secretary of the Child Protection Unit to urgently investigate the matter. The organisation emphasized the critical need to ensure the safety and well-being of the abused minor, warning of the potential consequences of neglecting such a sensitive case.
The revelations have raised serious concerns about the effectiveness of child protection measures in Lagos State. ACVPN’s condemnation highlights the urgent need for authorities to address these shortcomings promptly to prevent further occurences.
