This was made known in a statement shared on the state government’s X account on Friday.
Sharing photos from the festival, the state government wrote, “Governor Kefas revives Nwonyo International Fishing and Cultural Festival, After a 14-year hiatus.
“The festival was inaugurated on Friday with a grand opening ceremony held at the picturesque Lake Nwonyo in the Ibi local Government area of Taraba State.”
Nwonyo Fishing and Cultural Festival is said to be one of the oldest of its kind in Africa.
The festival started about 96 years ago and is usually held at the Nwonyo Lake, located some five kilometres north of Ibi town.
The Nwonyo Fishing Festival features activities like canoe parades, colourful cultural display, swimming, boat racing, masquerade dances, and the fish-catch competition, which is the main event.
