The Black Entertainment Television Network (BET) has unveiled the nominees for the 2024 BET Awards. This year’s list includes a strong showing from Nigerians, with Ayra Starr, Burna Boy, Tems, Seyi Vibez, and Asake all receiving nods.
Ayra Starr leads the pack with three nominations. She’s up for Best New Artist, Best International Act, and the BET Her award for her hit single “Commas.” She’ll face off against stars like Nicki Minaj, Beyoncé, Megan Thee Stallion, and Victoria Monet in the BET Her category.
Tems scored two nominations. She’s nominated for Video Director of the Year for directing the music video for her song “Me & U.” The GuiltyBeatz-produced track is also in the running for the Dr. Bobby Jones Best Gospel/Inspirational Award.
Burna Boy earned recognition in both the Best Male R&B/Pop Artist and Best Male Hip-Hop Artist categories. Here, he’ll compete against Chris Brown, Drake, and Usher. Seyi Vibez is a contender for Viewer’s Choice: Best New International Act, while Asake is nominated for Best International Act alongside artists like Tyla, Aya Nakamura, and Focalistic.
Chris Brown’s Afrobeats-infused song “Sensational,” featuring Nigerian superstars Davido and Lojay, also picked up a nomination in the Viewer’s Choice Award category.
South African singer Tyla, a Grammy Award winner, secured a total of four nominations, including Best Female R&B/Pop Artist, Best New Artist, Viewer’s Choice Award, and Best International Act.
In the film category, Nigerian-American actress Ayo Edebiri was nominated in the Best Actress category alongside Angela Bassett, Danielle Brooks, Fantasia, Halle Bailey, Issa Rae, and Regina King. Nigerian-British actor Damson Idris scored a nod in the Best Actor category. He’s up against Colman Domingo, Denzel Washington, Idris Elba, Jeffrey Wright, and Lakeith Stanfield.
The 2024 BET Awards celebrate “Standing on Culture” and air live from Los Angeles on BET on Sunday, June 30 at 8 pm ET/PT. Voting for the BET Awards’ 2024 Viewer’s Choice Award begins June 6 and ends June 30.
