At least six people were confirmed dead and seven others were seriously injured in an auto crash at Sabon Garin Takanebu in Miga Local Government Area of Jigawa State on Wednesday.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Lawan Adam, confirmed the incident in a statement on Thursday.
He said the accident involved a Mitsubishi Canter with number plate XA 519 KUR.
The statement read, “The incident happened when the driver, on reaching Sabon Gari Market, lost control and ran into traders, as a result of which 10 persons sustained various degrees of injuries while three died on the spot.
“A team of policemen rushed to the scene and conveyed the corpses and the injured to the Jahun General Hospital.
“However, three additional persons also died on the way to the hospital. They were confirmed dead by a medical doctor, bringing the total number of deaths to six, while the remaining seven victims are currently receiving treatment at the hospital.
The PPRO said the corpses have been released to their relatives for proper burial.
According to him, the investigation is in progress to ascertain the cause of the accident.
He said the state Commissioner of Police, A.T. Abdullahi, had extended his condolences to the deceased families and pleaded with motorists to drive carefully, as anyone caught driving recklessly would be arrested and prosecuted.
