Andy Robertson says his Scotland team can be the one that “makes history” as they prepare to kick off their Euro 2024 campaign.
In 12 major tournaments in the country’s history, including four European Championships, Scotland have never made it to the knockout stages.
Robertson says the opportunity to become a “legendary squad” has provided fuel as they prepare for their tournament opener against hosts Germany on Friday night.
“We don’t want to have any regrets,” the Scotland captain said. “What’s the worst that can happen?
“The worst that can happen is that we join a long list of so many good Scotland teams that failed to make it through the group.
“We know that’s what’s at stake. We’ve got a lot of incentive to do well, but one is becoming that legendary squad; that has to drive us forward.
“We’ve got a lot of motivation but that one for me is driving us forward. You never know what can happen in the knockout stages but we have to get there first.
“We believe we can be the team that makes history.”
Their first obstacle will be a strong German side going into the tournament as one of the favourites for the trophy.
Robertson is under no illusions about Scotland’s underdog status in the match, and highlighted Toni Kroos as a key threat in Julian Nagelsmann’s team.
“It’s no secret that Germany will probably dominate possession, they’ve got the best midfielder in the world in Toni Kroos, but when we have the ball we have to capitalise on it.
“We have to be composed, we have to be difficult to beat, try and frustrate them as much as we can. If we can do that, hopefully it’s enough to get a result.
“We know they’ll have a game plan as well and it’ll be about who shows up on the night. We hope that we can do it, we believe we can do it but Germany will want to do the same.
“There’s probably a lot of pressure on them to go and win the tournament but it’s up to us to try and put the first hurdle in front of them.”
