No fewer than nine people were killed, while 13 others suffered varying degrees of injuries in two separate crashes which occurred on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
While the first accident occurred on Monday night at about 9:33 pm around the Ogere area of the road claiming seven lives and leaving 11 injured, the second accident happened around Kara on Tuesday at about 9:30 am killing two people and injuring another two.
This is just as the Ogun State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Anthony Uga, urged commuters always to make it a priority to report drivers driving lawlessly by dialling the toll-free number 122.
The spokesperson for the State Sector Command of the FRSC, Florence Okpe, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday.
Giving the account of the Monday night accident, Okpe said that the accident involved a Mazda bus with registration number MNY894 and a truck with no number plate.
She said the Mazda bus, due to excessive speed, lost control and rammed into the truck from behind.
Okpe explained that while the injured were taken to the PATMAG Hospital Ogere for medical attention, the corpses of the dead were deposited at the FOS morgue Ipara.
The statement partly reads, “The crash occurred at 2133 hrs last night with 18 persons involved, which comprised 15 male adults and three female adults.
“A total of 11 people were injured (nine male adults and two female adults) while seven persons were recorded dead from the crash. Five males and two females.
“Vehicles involved were two: A truck with no registration number and a Mazda bus MNY894 YN.”
“The suspected cause of the crash was excessive speed on the part of the Mazda bus driver who rammed into a moving truck from the rear.”
Okpe disclosed further that the second accident, which happened on Tuesday at about 5:30 am, involved a blue Peugeot bus with registration number WRA224XA and an orange DAF truck with registration number ANC711XA.
She stated that the two vehicles collided because of excessive speed and consequent loss of control.
Okpe said, “Rescue operation was carried out today, Tuesday, June 25, 2024, by a team from the FRSC Ibafo Command at Kara, on a crash that occurred at about 0530hrs.”
“The crash involved two vehicles with the following details: Blue Peugeot Bus with registration number WRA224XA and Orange DAF Truck with registration number ANC711XA.”
“Male adults were involved in the crash. Two out of the persons involved were killed, while the other two were injured.”
“The injured victims were taken to the nearest hospital, and the corpses were handed over to the families of the deceased.”
She further stated that the suspected cause of the crash was speed and loss of control, which led to the rear collision of the two vehicles.
The Ogun FRSC Sector Commander, Uga, while reacting to these unfortunate incidents, however, cautioned motorists to stick to the speed limit especially at night and during the rain due to poor visibility.
Uga, who sympathised with the families of the crash victims, advised passengers to always be on the alert and caution the drivers when driving against the traffic laws
He urged them to call the 122 toll-free number always to report such reckless drivers.
