The Lagos State government has confirmed its plan to restrict unregulated commercial bus operations, such as Danfos and Koropes, along the Lekki-Epe route beginning October 1, 2024.
According to Vanguard, the government’s transportation adviser, Sola Giwa, stated that this move is consistent with the state’s Strategic Transportation Master Plan (STMP) and seeks to enhance the commuting experience in the area.
To do this, the government is working with public transit bus operators and union leaders to regulate and incorporate the informal transportation sector into the State’s Bus Reform Initiative.
The strategy includes reorganizing existing bus operations, deploying high-capacity buses, rerouting minibuses, implementing an e-ticketing system, and providing transportation infrastructure.
The implementation will be done in phases, and operators who fail to comply will face fines and forfeiture of their vehicles.
The government aims to enhance safety, passenger comfort, and security along the Lekki-Epe corridor.
