A Kwara State High Court in Ilorin, on Monday, fixed August 2 to deliver judgment in the case of six suspects standing trial for the bloody 2018 bank robbery in Offa.
Justice Haleema Salman fixed the date after the prosecution counsel, Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), and the defence counsel, Mathias Emeribe, adopted their final written addresses and canvassed final arguments in the six-year-long trial.
The bloody robbery, which happened on April 5, 2018 in the ancient town of Offa, Offa Local Government Area of Kwara State, led to the death of about 33 persons, including nine policemen.
The bank robbers reportedly made away with an undisclosed large sum of money from the attacked commercial banks.
The defendants on trial are a policeman, Michael Adikwu (who later died in police custody), Ayoade Akinnibosun, Azeez Salahudeen, Niyi Ogundiran, Ibikunle Ogunleye and Adeola Abraham.
They are facing charges bordering on criminal conspiracy to rob banks, murder of nine policemen and other citizens, and illegal possession of firearms.
The defendants were arraigned on November 11, 2018 and pleaded not guilty, following which the trial opened.
