The Police Service Commission (PSC) has emphasized the gravity of leaking classified government information, describing it as a felony with far-reaching consequences.
At the second edition of the PSC’s “Arena of Knowledge” lecture series, held on Wednesday, July 17, 2024, directors and a former commissioner of police led a thought-provoking discussion on the implications of leaking sensitive information.
Aminu Malumfashi, Director of Human Resource Management, stressed that while the Freedom of Information Act promotes transparency, it does not supersede the government’s authority to protect classified information essential to national security.
CP Suleiman Balarabe Nayaya (rtd) presented a paper on the emergence of special substantive laws in the 21st century, highlighting the consequences of leakage and exceptions to the Right of Access to Information in International Human Rights Treaties and Conventions.
The lecture series aims to promote learning and improve knowledge of government rules and regulations among PSC staff. The next edition will focus on cybercrime, a pressing issue since 2015.
The PSC’s stance on leaking classified information serves as a reminder to government agencies and employees of the importance of maintaining confidentiality and upholding national security.
