In a swift and decisive action, Lagos State Police successfully detonated an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) discovered earlier today. The news was confirmed by the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, to GATMASH NEWS.
In a commendable act of vigilance and quick response, a police officer reported to the EOD-CBRN base at Ikeja that he had spotted an unregistered white Corolla car parked on the main road close to the gate of PMF 23 Barracks, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, Ikeja. A young man was observed alighting from the car, carefully dropping a bag by the side of the Nigeria Customs Service Federal Operations Unit fence, and then swiftly returning to the vehicle and speeding off. The suspicious bag containing the device was first spotted around 3:55 PM today, July 31, 2024.
Based on this report, a team from the EOD-CBRN base was immediately mobilized to the scene to identify the object and render it safe if it was confirmed to be an IED. Upon arrival, the team discovered that the bag indeed contained an Improvised Explosive Device (IED).
The area was promptly cordoned off, and standard operating procedures were adopted to ensure the safety of all present. The IED was safely rendered inactive and subsequently taken to a safe distance for detonation.
The residual of the IED has been collected for further analysis and investigation. According to Hundeyin, the area is now calm and secure, with no immediate threat to public safety.
This incident highlights the importance of vigilance and swift action in preventing potential tragedies.
The Lagos State Police continue their efforts to track the individual who planted the IED, with surveillance footage from the area under review to aid in the investigation.
Residents are urged to remain vigilant, especially in areas with large gatherings, and to report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
