The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has launched a formal investigation into a viral video circulating on social media that shows a female traveler tearing up a Nigerian Standard Passport at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.
The NIS confirmed that the individual involved has been identified and has been summoned for further questioning. According to the Service, if the allegations are proven, her actions would be in violation of Section 10(b) of the Immigration Act 2015 (as amended). The penalties for such a breach are detailed under Section 10(h) of the same Act.
In a statement released by the NIS, the Service reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the provisions of the Immigration Act to ensure national security and to protect the dignity and integrity of Nigeria’s legal instruments.
The statement, signed by DCI KT Udo, the Service Public Relations Officer, emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and that further details will be provided as they become available.
The incident has sparked widespread discussion online, with many calling for strict enforcement of immigration laws to deter similar actions in the future.
The NIS assured the public that it will take appropriate measures to address the situation in accordance with the law.
