Three men, including the victim’s stepfather, have been arrested and charged with defilement in Lagos State, Nigeria.
On September 9, 2024, a case was transferred from the Ago Okota Police Division to the Gender Unit of the Lagos State Police Command, Ikeja, involving the alleged defilement of a 12-year-old girl.
The suspects, Chibuzo Benjamin, 43, Sunday Akpan, 51, and Emmanuel Okechukwu, 42, all residents of Canal View, Ago Okota, Lagos, were accused of having unlawful carnal knowledge of the minor since August 2024. Shockingly, Chibuzo Benjamin is the stepfather of the survivor, while the other two suspects live on the same street as the survivor’s mother and stepfather.
According to SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Chibuzor Benjamin and Sunday Akpan confessed to the crime, but Emmanuel Okechukwu denied the allegations. The three suspects were arraigned in court for defilement on September 20, 2024.
This heartbreaking incident highlights the need for increased vigilance and protection for vulnerable members of our society, especially children. The Lagos State Police Command’s swift action in apprehending the suspects is commendable, and justice must be served to ensure the survivor receives the support and protection she deserves.
