…Egbewole Unveils Plans for Future Growth

The University of Ilorin held its 39th convocation ceremony on Monday, October 21st, 2024, celebrating the academic achievements of 12,042 undergraduate and 1,875 postgraduate students.
The event, which took place at the university’s main auditorium, was attended by dignitaries from across the country.
In his address, the Vice-Chancellor Professor Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, highlighted the university’s strides in research, innovation, and academic excellence.
Professor Egbewole noted that the university has made significant progress since its inception, and its commitment to excellence has earned it numerous accolades.
“We are no longer where we were,” Professor Egbewole said, adding, “We have moved forward, and our achievements are a testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff and students.”
Of the 12,042 undergraduate graduand, 256 got First Class honours. Other categories if degrees are:
– 3,842 Second Class (Upper Division)
– 6,178 Second Class (Lower Division)
– 1,299 Third Class
– 62 Pass degrees
– 124 MB;BS
– 64 Nursing
– 35 Optometry
– 30 Veterinary Medicine graduands
According to Professor Egbewole, the university’s achievements include:
– Ranked the most preferred university in Nigeria by JAMB for five consecutive years
– Received New Telegraph’s Award of University of first choice in Nigeria in 2023
– Ranked 3rd best Nigerian university in scholarly outputs in 2024
– Holds the record for the most patents (20) as announced by the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology
The university has allocated ₦200,000,000 Senate Research Grant (SRG) for excellence in research, teaching, and community engagement. An additional ₦50,000,000 has been allocated to SRG (Special Intervention). The university has also established the ‘Innovator of the Year’ award with a handsome reward.
Professor Egbewole outlined the university’s future plans, including:
– Increase research grant and support faculty for cutting-edge research
– Improve transportation, Health Centre facilities, and students’ accommodation
– Commissioning of new projects during the convocation ceremony
– Launch of a new university website with automated processes
The Vice Chancellor charged tge graduands to “Utilize your training, contribute meaningfully to national development, and uphold our values.” Professor Egbewole charged the graduands. “You are no longer where you were; you are now ambassadors of this great institution.”
