…Empowers Emerging Designers
By: Theresa Moses
The 7th Edition of the GTCO Fashion Weekend kicked off with its first masterclass sessions with Lulu Kennedy, the visionary force behind Fashion East, who has been instrumental in shaping London’s vibrant fashion scene.
The session on incubating Talent: Supporting the next generation, With no formal fashion training, Kennedy’s instinct-driven approach has empowered emerging designers, fostering a community-driven and inclusive industry.
Kennedy’s journey began in London’s underground party scene, where she discovered her passion for connecting and supporting local creatives. Fashion East, her pioneering project, has incubated some of Britain’s most talented designers, providing vital grants, mentoring, and industry introductions.
“I’m not here to dictate trends, but to empower designers to express themselves authentically,” Kennedy emphasizes. Her focus on individuality and authenticity has fueled longevity in the industry, with designers like Maximilian Davis gaining international acclaim.
Kennedy advocates for collaboration between designers, manufacturers, and investors, envisioning a future where these players work hand-in-hand to build enduring brands. She acknowledged the challenges faced by even the most talented designers and stressed the importance of organizations like Fashion East in bridging gaps.
As a mentor, Kennedy prioritizes comfort, expression, and bold experimentation. Her own style reflects “Top Boy” aesthetics – comfort over conventionality with an edgy, androgynous flair.
Balancing multiple roles, Kennedy has learned to focus on her passion for Fashion East. Adding that Motherhood taught her the value of prioritization, leading her to close her own brand and concentrate on nurturing new designers.
Looking ahead, Kennedy dreams of creating a dedicated creative hub in London, offering studio spaces, photography facilities, retail opportunities, and collaboration spaces. This hub would provide young designers a stable ground to grow their brands and foster a sustainable fashion community.
As Fashion East approaches its 25th anniversary, Kennedy reflects on her journey, humbled by acknowledgement of her role in keeping London on the fashion map. Her response is characteristically focused: “I’m busy thinking about next season, the designers we currently work with.”
The COVID-19 pandemic presented unprecedented challenges, but Kennedy’s determination and government grants enabled Fashion East to adapt. The team organized socially distanced events, showcasing designers’ work and yielding one of their strongest seasons.
Through her work, Kennedy champions a forward-thinking, inclusive, and community-driven approach to fashion. Her legacy is clear: making London a vibrant, supportive space where designers, creators, and innovators can flourish.
“I want to do something that’s going to help others,” Kennedy says, her commitment to empowering the next generation of designers unwavering. As London’s fashion scene evolves, Lulu Kennedy remains an undeniable force, shaping the industry’s future with her unique vision and dedication.
