The man behind the coup in Guinea Conakry says he wants a peaceful transition. Colonel Mamady Doumbouya calls a meeting of ministers of ousted president Alpha Condé after banning them from leaving the country and dissolving the government. We take a closer look at this special edition.
The leaders of a military coup in Guinea have promised to set up a transitional government of national unity but provided no details of when the country would return to democratic elections. The takeover has toppled President Alpha Condé, who came to power in 2010 and has been accused of becoming increasingly authoritarian.
Amnesty International, in a statement on Monday, called on the coup leaders to clarify the legal basis for Conde’s detention, and to free those Conde had arbitrarily detained in the months surrounding last year’s election.
Regional experts say however that unlike in landlocked Mali where neighbours and partners were able to pressure a junta thereafter a coup in August 2020, leverage on the military in Guinea could be limited because it is not landlocked and also because it is not a member of the West African currency union.
