The Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) will commence online Teachers’ Professional Qualifying Examination (PQE) for Nigerian education graduates in the diaspora who were not registered with the council.
The TRCN Registrar and Chief Executive, Prof. Josiah Ajiboye, disclosed this in Abuja on Friday, in a statement signed by Mr Muyiwa Ojewuyi, Head of Press and Protocol of the council.
Ajiboye said that the window which permitted Nigerian education graduates based abroad to be registered by TRCN without taking the Teachers’ PQE had been closed.
He added that the decision to put a stop to the examination waiver enjoyed by Nigerians in the diaspora was in line with the need to institutionalise the computer-based teachers PQE for prospective teachers before registration and induction.
“Any Nigerian in the diaspora who wishes to earn TRCN’s certificate and license will have to write the online Teachers PQE and pass before being qualified for registration by TRCN,” Ajiboye said.
He reassured Nigerians that the council would not relent in its efforts toward enhancing teacher education and quality vis-à-vis teachers’ professionalism in Nigeria.
Ajiboye said the policies and programmes were based on the yearnings and aspirations of the people.
He said the TRCN and National Teachers Institute were working harmoniously in ensuring that the standard and quality of service by Nigerian teachers in primary, secondary and tertiary institutions met with international standards.
“We are determined to ensure that teaching profession in Nigeria is ranked amongst the best in the world.
“To achieve this goal, we must encourage ourselves to do our jobs as expected, in order to leave a legacy of excellence to the future generations of Nigerian teachers,” he said.
The Council had concluded arrangements to hold the May 2019 diet of the Teachers PQE between May 24 and May 25.
Ajiboye noted that the examination would hold simultaneously at the various Computer Based Test (CBT) centres across the country.
He charged Nigerian education graduates teaching without TRCN certificate to start the process of registering with the council.
The TRCN Registrar reiterated that the National Council on Education had approved December as deadline for all teachers in the country to register with TRCN.
