A Kwara State High Court on Thursday jailed Jamiu Olaoye, the son of a former Deputy Rector, Federal Polytechnic, Offa, Kwara State, for offences bordering on cybercrime.
Olaoye was convicted and sentenced alongside two others, Badmus Moyosore and Ibrahim Abdulsalam, by Justice Adenike Akinpelu.
The three men, who were prosecuted on separate charges of cyber fraud by the Ilorin Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, pleaded guilty to the charges.
Following their pleas, counsel for the EFCC, Rasheedat Alao, called witnesses who were operatives of the commission to review the facts of the cases.
According to the witness who testified against Olaoye, the defendant defrauded one of his victims to the tune of $2,000, while the testimony against Moyosore revealed that he swindled his victim out of $200.
In the same vein, Abdulsalam was involved in a “sugar baby relationship scam” as over N18m suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activities passed through his account.
Justice Akinpelu held that the EFCC had established its cases against the men and pronounced them guilty.
The judge sentenced Olaoye to a term of six months’ imprisonment with an option of fine of N150,000.
The court also ordered that the iPhone he used to perpetrate the crime and the draft of N400,000 he raised as restitution, be forfeited to the Federal Government.
Similarly, Justice Akinpelu sentenced Moyosore to six months’ imprisonment with a fine option of N100,000.
Two phones and a laptop used by the convict to perpetrate the crime were also forfeited to the Federal Government.
The judge equally sentenced Abdulsalam to six months’ imprisonment with N150,000 as a fine option.
He ordered the forfeiture of a Toyota Camry, two phones and a laptop used by the convict to the Federal Government.
