A Sokoto-based musician and actor, Umar Usman, aka Sojaboy, has donated educational materials, detergents and pomade to orphanages and schools in the state, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.
Presenting the items at the UK Jarma Academy in Sokoto on Friday, Usman said the gesture was to support his community.
The entertainer stated that he grew up as an underprivileged child from a humble background who had to struggle to make a living. According to him, he also established a foundation to support the underprivileged persons, especially children.
He said, “I provided cartons of chalk, exercise books, textbooks, school uniforms and cash as support for some schools,” he said.
He also stated that the UK Karma Academy was chosen because the school hosted orphans who lost their parents due to the insurgency in Borno and Yobe states.
Urging wealthy Nigerians to support the underprivileged in society, he insisted that some people needed assistance to get uniforms, books and food, so as to enroll their children in schools.
In his response, the school’s principal, Murtala Ummarun-Kwabo, said the school was established in 2018 and had orphans from Borno and Yobe states, and the 23 local government areas of Sokoto State. He added that proper arrangement was made by the proprietor to ensure the smooth running of the school.
