Former Manchester United winger Nani has stated he joined Venezia to help Nigerian striker David Okere and the other forwards score goals as they continue their battle to avoid relegation in the Italian Serie A, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Nani, who spent almost three years with Major League Soccer side Orlando, joined Venezia on a free transfer after signing a year-and-half deal with the Italian club on January 14.
Playing for the Winged Lions, as Venezia are fondly called, provides a new chapter for the 35-year-old’s career, having represented top clubs like Sporting Lisbon, Manchester United, Lazio, Valencia and Fenerbahce, some of whom he won titles with.
However, Nani now finds himself in a club fighting for safety, just months after securing promotion to the Italian Serie A, as they currently sit 17th on the log, just a point above the relegation zone.
The Portuguese winger was signed to help add bite to the attack. Okereke and Mattia Aramu have scored five goals each, while Frenchman Thomas Henry has netted four times.
According to Walfoot.be, the former Red Devils player said he was ready to assist his new teammates.
“I have a lot of experience; maybe I can make more use of goal-scoring opportunities for my teammates,” Nani was quoted as saying by Walfoot.
“I’m not at my best, I know, I lack training, but I’m already in better form. I know this team needs to score goals, and I’m here to score and especially to assist Okereke, Henry, Johnsen, and the others. I’ve seen the team play a bit, and I think we have good players.”
