The lingering leadership crisis rocking the Nigerian Basketball Federation may lead to the country’s withdrawal from all international competitions, a top ministry official has told Saturday PUNCH.
The NBBF elections January 31 in Abuja and Edo State produced two parallel boards headed by Mark Igoche (Abuja) and incumbent Musa Ahmadu-Kida (Edo), thus further putting the administration of the sport in jeopardy.
Following the latest development, our source said the ministry might withdraw the country from international competitions, in order to resolve the crisis rocking the federation on the domestic front.
“This move is to ensure that sanity returns to the basketball space and most importantly, help the country develop its domestic league that has been in comatose in recent years,” the ministry official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said.
“All options are on the table because the most paramount and important issue for stakeholders is the revival of basketball in the country and the rejuvenation of the leagues, as well as grassroots talents hunt.
“The government will consider all available options that will aid the development of basketball in the country.”
