An Ekiti State Magistrate’s Court, Ado Ekiti District has ordered the remand of a 63-year-old cleric, Akin Aderiye, in the custodial centre for allegedly defiling an eight-year-old girl.
According to the charge, “The defendant was reasonably suspected to have sexually assaulted an eight year old minor on February 10, 2022 in Esure Ekiti, Ido/Osi Local Government Area of Ekiti State, contrary to and punishable under Section 31 of the Child Right Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.”
In her recorded statement to the police, the minor said, “I was coming from my school when Baba Esure (the defendant) called me to come and collect money. He put me on his lap and put his finger to where I am urinating but did not give me the money, the place is now paining me.”
The police prosecutor, Inspector Akinwale Oriyomi, urged the court to remand the defendant “to allow police complete their investigation and for onward transmission of the case file to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for issuance of legal advice.”
The Chief Magistrate, Bankole Oluwasanmi, who granted the prosecutor’s request, said, “Application to remand the accused person for 30 days pending police investigation is hereby granted.”
The chief magistrate adjourned the case till March 21 for mention.
