The Ekiti State Police Command on Tuesday said it arrested six suspected cultists in Oye Ekiti in the Oye council area of the state.
The suspects, said to be members of the De Norsemen, were arrested around 8.30am on Tuesday while holding a meeting in a hideout in the university town.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Sunday Abutu, in a statement, said, “The command received credible information on the activities of the cult. Upon receipt of the information, operatives of the Rapid Response Squad mobilised to the scene.”
Abutu identified the suspects as Paul, Wisdom, David, Kester, Raymond and Daniel, adding that “during interrogation, they confessed to be Indian hemp smokers and claimed to be students of the Federal University, Oye Ekiti.”
According to him, items recovered from the suspects at the scene are “two cutlasses, one hammer, two cups of loud hemp, three wraps of weeds suspected to be Indian hemp, and different charms.”
He said the suspects would be prosecuted on completion of investigation, advising parents and guardians to emphasise the danger of cultism to their children and wards.
