The Kogi State government has ordered the arrest and prosecution of a woman, Elizabeth Abu, for allegedly maltreating her step-son.
The state Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Fatima Buba, ordered the arrest following information received from the governor, Yahaya Bello.
Consequently, the arrested woman has been charged to court for inflicting bodily harm on the boy.
It was gathered that the Commissioner swung into action after she was informed by the Bello about the mannerless act.
After thorough interrogation by the Commissioner and her team, the woman, Elizabeth Abu who is married to Ewongolu Emmanuel confessed to the crime, saying she did not intend to inflict such pain on the boy.
According to the boy, David Ewongolu, in an interview, he sustained the injuries on his buttock from a whipping he got from his step-mom for using part of his clothing to make duster, saying it looked like it was burnt with a hot electric Iron.
The commissioner, while reacting to the development, expressed sadness over the incident.
According to the commissioner, the boy is currently recieving treatment at the Kogi State Specialist Hospital.
Buba, who was fully on ground to expedite action on the development in collaboration with the Police Commissioner, Edward Eboka, urged the Ministry’s Legal team to ensure that the law of the land takes its course.
The Secretary to the state government, Folashade Arike, was also on ground at the hospital where the boy was receiving treatment.
She said that the New Direction Government led by Alhaji Yahaya Bello has zero tolerance for child abuse, stressing that guardians and parents must take great care in raising their children to become responsible citizens.
