Ghana fans are confident the Black Stars will emerge victorious when they battle Nigeria in the first leg of their Qatar 2022 World Cup qualifier at the Baba Yara stadium in Kumasi on March 25.
The Confederation of African Football on Wednesday granted a one-match license for the stadium to host the match after the Cape Coast Stadium was deemed unfit to host the qualifier.
Baba Yara Stadium is the Black Stars fortress, where the goals rain down on opponents in torrents and Ghanaians hold fond memories of the stadium, which was the venue in 2013 when they thrashed Egypt 6-1 on their way to qualifying 7-3 on aggregate for the 2014 World Cup in 2014.
The result was Ghana’s highest win against Egypt and their second highest in the World Cup qualifying campaign after defeating Lesotho 7-0 in June 2012 in Kumasi.
It was at the same ground, that local giants Asante Kotoko mauled Egyptian club Zamalek 5-1 in a continental club match.
Ghanaian fans taunted the Super Eagles ahead of the mouth-watering clash, saying they would join the list of teams who lost by high margins in Kumasi. One of the Ghanaian fans Jesse Gyabaah said the Eagles fate won’t be different from Egypt’s nine years ago. “Seirra Leone went to Nigeria and scored lots of goals, so you think you can come score Ghana at Baba Yara? Ask Egypt how they collected 6-1 at the same venue and come prepared with a basket, you guys will collect an avalanche of goals back to Abuja.”“Ask Egypt the last time they came to Kumasi what happened. We will spell NIGERIA or NAIJA. Your best result would be 3-0,” boasted Emmanuel Garbrah on Twitter. Mr Bismark, who also wrote on Twitter, believes the double-header qualifier would be decided from the outcome of the first leg in Ghana. “You’re coming to collect, it’s as simple as that. The game will be finished in Ghana.”@Ballon_88 wrote, “Nigerians should ask Egypt what we did to them here (Kumasi). Even if the FIFPRO 11 squad should come here, we’ll score as much as we want.”
“The last time a World Cup play-off game was held at the Baba Yara Stadium, it ended 6-1 in favour of Ghana. Expect the same treatment,” added @micky_jnr.
