The Edo State Police Command has denied a report that a suspected ritualist with a human leg was apprehended at a police checkpoint on Akhionbare Street, Benin, the state capital.
A viral video circulating online depicted the arrest of the suspect by an angry mob.
However, the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bello Kontongs, said the online report on the video was a misrepresentation of facts.
He explained that the video showed an accident that claimed the life of a security guard.
Kontongs said, “The report is a misrepresentation of fact. The car was involved in an accident and the leg seen in the car was for one of the victims who died on the spot and his body was deposited in a mortuary.
“The vehicle hit the security man and severed his left leg; he later died. The other security man that fractured his leg as a result of the accident has been taken by his family to Plateau State where they set bones.”
The PPRO confirmed that the driver responsible for the accident was in custody at the Adeyan Police Station, GRA, Benin.
