The Chairman of Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers State, Confidence Deko, has donated relief materials to over 60 families sacked by a rainstorm in Ward 2, Bodo communities.
The PUNCH had reported that the roofs of several buildings were affected during a rainstorm that ravaged the area recently.
In a speech after handing over the materials comprising foodstuff, mattresses and mosquito nets to the victims, Dekor said he came to sympathise with the families.
He stated, “You are the ones we came here for the other day when this happened. And we promised you that we would come back.
“Today, in fulfilment of that promise we made, we have come to give you a token from the bottom of our heart as it is presented before you.
“Kindly receive us. This is just a testimony that what happened to you is of great concern to us and that we are in sympathy with you.
“Please take it from us in good faith and may God bless you as you use them.”
A woman leader in the area, known as Madam Daughter, thanked the council chairman for the gesture to the victims.
She said, “The chairman of Gokana LGA is in Bodo today because there was a natural disaster in the area. People’s roofs were blown away.
“Everybody was just in a pitiable situation. The chairman came to give some relief in the form of foodstuffs. So the people of Bodo are happy.
“The paramount ruler is here, everybody is present because it has never happened before. That a council chairman came to the people asking them to get themselves back together, I think it is a thing of joy.”
On his part, the councillor representing Ward 2, Festus Vuraki, thanked the chairman for his show of love.
Vuraki stated, “You will recall that a natural disaster rendered about 60 families homeless. You (LG chairman) listened to our cry and responded promptly. And you promised that you will support the victims no matter who they might be.
“You have fulfilled that promise as we can see here today. You have surprised us by giving people relief materials. I wish to express my appreciation to you.
“Thank you for this show of love and history will record it in your favour. This is not the first time such a situation was taking place, but we can say this is the first time the council is responding to it.”
