Nigeria international Taiwo Awoniyi on Saturday ended the 2021/22 German Bundesliga season in style as his dramatic late winner powered Union Berlin to a 3-2 win over Bochum at the Alte Foersterei, PUNCH Sports Extra.
The striker has now scored a total of 20 goals for the campaign across all competitions proving he can compete with the best when in his best shape.
Awoniyi scored his 14th and 15th league goals to help the Iron Ones seal the Europa League spot for next season.
Heading into the last game of the season, Union occupied fifth position, a point behind Freiburg who were fourth on the log and needed a win to leapfrog to finish in fifth position.
After Grischa Promel scored the opening goal of the match in the fifth minute in favour of Berlin, Awoniyi added the second in the 25th minute.
Bochum scored their second in the 55th minute through Simon Zoller before equalizing in the 79th minute through Eduard Lowen.
Awoniyi scored the vital goal in the 88th minute to make sure Berlin – with 57 points and fifth on the log – ended the season on a winning note.
It was a huge celebration in front of the home crowds, who chanted the Super Eagles striker’s name.
It was a great season-ending for the former Liverpool player as he ended his first season away from the club on a permanent basis with 20 goals, his best tally ever in a single season.
The Nigeria international endured a difficult time during his seven years spell with Liverpool where he never made a single appearance for the Reds.
During these periods, the striker had loan spells with several clubs.
Awoniyi only managed just five goals from 22 appearances in the 2020/21 season.
The 24-year-old best season was with Gent during the 2018/19 season where he scored a total of 14 goals across all competitions.
