On the 9th, October 2020, the High Court in Lagos convicted one Olaide Ibraheem on the charges of forgery and forcibly entry with regards to a property situated at No 2, Baba Yusuf Close, Ikeja, Lagos. (Charge No: ID /3752c/17, between THE STATE OF LAGOS VERSUS OLAIDE IBRAHEEM, delivered by Justice Ipaye, on the 9th day of October, 2020 wherein the Appellant (Olaide Ibrahim) was convicted of the offences of forgery and forcible entry but discharge of the offence of criminal damage to property.)
That conviction; as ordinary as it were, surprisingly gained the highest media attention, such that, it became cover headlines in almost all the newspapers, magazines, radio stations and indeed the social media, it was so much publicised that it began to arouse the suspicion of discerning members of the public, given the calibre of the individuals involved in the case, being civil servants. Olaide Ibraheem, a Direction in Alausa and LASEMA boss Femi Oke Osanyintolu, who himself was recently promoted to the position of a permanent secretary.
True to suspicion, there seems to be a kind of media gangup against the respondent, Ibraheem, in the case. Though, the Court of Appeal Lagos, has set aside the judgement of the lower court, siting series of glaring errors and miscarriage of justice.
The three judges of the Appeal Court, Justices Jimi Olukayode Bada, Folashade Ayodeji Ojo and Abba Bello Mohammed, all unanimously agreed that there were lots of visible errors in the judgement of the lower court delivered by Justice Ipaye, and therefore set aside the judgement and therein discharged and acquitted the Appellant in the Appeal, Olaide Ibraheem.
The takeaway of this report however, is the lack of media reportage of the Appeal, it lacked the energy and publicity given to the judgement of the High Court on the same matter, which rightly brought to mind, the kind of journalism that is practiced in this part of the world.
The body language of the media in this instance, despite its significant presence at the court while the judgement was read out, clearly showed that a significant proportion of the reporters at the court on that day were bewildered on the outcome of the Appeal, logically because, they (may) have been bought over by the previous victor in the case.
I need not begin to mention names of those so called reputable media outfits involved in what could best be described as ‘media conspiracy’, Google is your friend on this occasion.
