The Old Grammarians’ Society of the CMS Grammar School, Lagos, has unveiled a $2m solarisation, and computerisation projects for its alma mater.
Speaking at the thanksgiving and dedication of the projects embarked on by the OGS in celebration of the 163rd Founder’s Day of CMS Grammar School, The President, OGS America, Mr. Akin Popoola, said, computerisation was crucial to modern teaching and learning.
Various projects such as solarisation of its perimeter fence, kitchen, ICT, and training centre, among others were commissioned at the event.
“We have four pillars for the project, the first is to have a computerised system and have an internet connection within the school, so that the students can log on. The second one is to ensure an effective electronic learning system as well as an intercom for easy communication. The third pillar is the ICT so that 100 per cent of our students who are not college bound, can be technologically prepared to learn soft skills, as well as an uninterrupted power supply.”
Popoola noted that a portion of the money would be saved for replacement and maintenance of the projects, while expressing hope that the school would also contribute its own quota towards it.
The Chairman, OGS UK and Europe, Mr John Emore, said, ‘‘We know that education in this country is inferior. The government should ensure that our future, which is our children, must do better than we have done. ‘‘If you give them lousy education, then you are going to have lousy administration. We cannot afford to fail in this country; Nigeria is the black most populated nation. We need to make sure that we bring education back as a priority.”
The President, OGS, Mr Olu Vincent, who expressed excitement about the Founder’s Day said since the return of the school to the mission by the state government, the Old Boys had developed special passion to see to its restoration to its former glory.
He said, ‘‘Government alone cannot fund education, stakeholders must work with them to put various projects in place for the development of the students.’’
