The incident was said to have happened on Wednesday at the Hillview Estate, Nkwelle, Ezunaka area of the state.
In a statement made available to journalists in Awka on Thursday, the state’s police spokesman, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the suspect allegedly murdered the toddler, whose name was given as Divine Eze, when he visited the father of the child and spent the night.
The police statement read partly, “The Anambra State Police Operatives have today June 16, 2022, arrested one Mr. Onwele Anayo ‘M’ aged 34 years on the murder of Divine Eze ‘M’ aged three years, residing in Hillview Estate, Nkwelle -Ezunaka.
“Preliminary information showed that the suspect visited the father of the victim yesterday June 15, 2022, and spent the night in the victim’s house. In the early hours of today June 16, an argument ensued between the father and the suspect. The suspect (Mr. Anayo) took the child (Divine) as he was sleeping and killed him, by hitting him on the floor severally.
“Anayo carried a knife from the room, and pursued the father around the house, threatening to kill him.
“Police operatives have visited the scene and recovered the body of the child and the investigation is ongoing. Further development will be communicated please.”
