The Controller General, Nigerian Correctional Service, Haliru Nababa, has said measures put in place to prevent attacks on correctional centres across the country have been yielding results.
According to him, this is the major reason the correctional centres have not been attacked recently.
He, however, clarified that the country had yet to experience jailbreaks, saying that there had only been attacks on correctional centres.
Nabba spoke during the decoration of recently promoted senior NCS officers in Abuja on Friday.
He said, “I would like to make this correction that we don’t have jailbreaks in the country, what we had were jail attacks. When we say jailbreak, we mean an uprising in the correctional centre but recently what we have had were attacks from outside; these are called jail attacks.
“We have taken a lot of steps to ensure this never happens to our centres and they have been yielding results. If you can remember, the last time we had this kind of issue was last year in November.”
Charged the promoted senior officers to ensure they secure the centre at all costs, he added, “I must not remind you that this is a trying moment for all Nigerians, especially those of us saddled with the specific responsibility of providing security. As you have been instructed, all Nigerian Correctional Service facilities must be kept safe and inviolable at all costs.”
At the ceremony, 23 Controllers were promoted to Assistant Controller-Generals while 43 Deputy Controllers were promoted to Controllers.
