Growing up in the Northern part of Nigeria, particularly Jos, in Plateau state, my mom mandates us to take milk daily.
With my childhood in the north where cattle are reared in abundance, I can confidently say Nigerians have always been lovers of milk hence they drink a lot of it.
As kids, we love the refreshing taste and care less about the nutritional benefits or values of milk but with the intense competition among brands in dairy industry in Nigeria today, has made it easier for consumers to know more about the nutritional contents of their brand of milk.
The milk section has witnessed increased influx of different brands (both foreign and local) competing for superiority in the hearts of the consumers.
No doubt, milk has been enjoyed for thousands of years. The most commonly consumed types come from cows, sheep, goats and even some plants and seeds. Nigerians largely consumed raw cow milk most frequently before it’s packaged in a convenient form (tin, sachet, pack).
Milk is packed with impressive arrays of nutrients, an excellent source of vitamins A, D, B12 and minerals, potassium, calcium, magnesium, zinc, phosphorus etc, which are lacking in many diets.
In addition, milk is also a source of quality protein necessary for many vital functions in the body, including growth and development, cellular repair and immune system regulation and hundreds of different healthy fats and antioxidants.
However, the nutritional content of milk varies, depending on some factors like its fat content, the diet and treatment of the cow such milk came from.
It has also be proven that Milk boost muscle repair in athletes. I remember during inter-house sports competition in school, we were given milk to refresh ourselves after an exhausting distance race. Little did we know that it can decrease muscle damage, promote muscle repair, and increase strength.
Drinking milk has long been associated with maintaining strong and healthy bones. Aside from drinking milk, incorporating it into our daily routine makes a powerful combination in smoothies, Oatmeal, Coffee, Soups etc
Considering the powerful combination of nutrients in milk, Gatmash News wants consumers to vote for their favourite milk: Peak, Cowbell and others via its social media handles with the hashtag #GatmashMilkGoodness.
Milk is one of the most competitive and popular in the food and beverage industry because of its daily use either for breakfast, lunch, or using it to make other foods processed and unprocessed. However, which milk is winning the heart of consumers? Gatmash News chose Peak and Cowbell milk because they are the two leading milk brands in Nigeria.
For over 65 years Peak milk, produced in Nigeria by FrieslandCampina WAMCO, under licence of FrieslandCampina, Holland is one brand that has stood the test of time despite the introduction of various brands, it remains the brand to beat.
Cowbell Milk, a product of Promasidor, a subsidiary of South Africa based Promasidor Holdings in the past 29 years introduced powdered milk in smaller sachets was the first to challenge Peak’s dominance in the dairy industry in Nigeria. Growing up, branded milk was seen as a luxury, an elitist brand exclusive for the rich, influential and powerful. But the introduction of cowbell powdered milk changed the narratives; giving average Nigerians access to luxury of branded milk at an affordable price.
Such a healthy threat in a competitive market posed by Cowbell galvanised into making Peak milk to transit into packaging their products in smaller sachets, both in powdered and evaporated form, an opportunity they grabbed to walk their way into the homes of the middle class and low-income earners. Though other brands have upped their games in terms of gram, taste, and packaging, just to get the attention of consumers to their end, the focus of this article is between Peak and Cowbell milk.
Consumers know what they want and express their undying love for their choice brands. It is clear that there is a healthy competition between Peak and Cowbell milk as they have employed more marketing techniques than other brands in a bid to keep their name on the lips of their consumers in the Nigerian competitive market.
