The Nigeria Union of Teachers has said it will initiate policies that will lead to development and sustainable livelihood.
Speaking at a press conference, Lagos State Chairman, NUT, Hassan Akintoye, revealed that its forthcoming maiden annual lecture and award series, titled, ‘Development through education: Learning and livelihood,’ would be used as a means of creating policy that would lead to national development using education.
He added that the event would take place on August 5, 2022, at the NUT Pavillion, Ikeja.
He said, ‘‘Nigeria Union of Teachers (Lagos State Wing) is celebrating our legacy of family values by focusing on education.
‘‘The aim of the theme aims to provide an opportunity for academicians, professionals, policymakers, investors, bankers, and administrators from various fields with cross-disciplinary interests to bridge the falling education standard gaps, knowledge gaps, promote industry skill-sets acquisition and entrepreneurship content needed for a sustainable educational system.’’
He added that two personalities and one organisation, based on the role they played towards the growth of education in Lagos would be awarded in the following categories, Noble Award for Education Development, Outstanding Support System for Education Sector, and Outstanding Brand Support for Education Sector.
Speakers expected at the lecture are the Senator representing Ekiti Central, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, Lagos State Commissioner for Education, Mrs Folashade Adefisayo, and Head of Department, Education Foundation Department, Olabisi Onabano University, Prof. Taiwo Edun.
‘‘We are bringing Senator Bamidele because there is the need to create enabling legislature to support whatever idea we come up with in the programme.
‘‘Mrs Adefisayo has championed a new direction which is executed in Lagos by creating comprehensive high schools, and it is in line with the theme we have chosen. We can make an impact by lending support that will make it possible for the desired transformation we are looking for. As for Prof. Edun, there is the need to create a new direction with stakeholders in the higher institutions so that the policy will be incorporated into higher schools based on our focus on development.’’
