An enviroment-centred organisation, FABE foundation, has organised a clean-up at the Okun-Ajah beach in the Lekki area of Lagos State.
During the exercise, the foundation, in partnership with another organisation, Cardonic, also sensitised the community to the impact of plastic pollution on the environment.
A statement made available to The PUNCH on Wednesday noted that the foundation’s Chief Executive Officer, Temitope Okunnu, urged community members to desist from dumping plastics or littering the environment.
“Our goal is to create a recycling hub in communities to encourage recycling,” Mrs Okunnu was quoted as saying.
The statement further explained, “Each beach clean-up organised at FABE is directed at cleaning the beach shores and ridding them of plastics that pollute the ocean as well as sensitise the community on the impacts of plastic pollution on the environment.”
During the cleanup at Okun-Ajah beach, the foundation members and volunteers gathered 362.9kg of plastics.
FABE has conducted beach cleanup activities in over 50 communities across Nigeria, including the Lagos State Lagoon front Cleanup in Akoka, Lagos, and Beach cleanup at Magbon Alade in Lekki, Lagos.
The foundation aims to promote and create eco-conscious communities by engaging youths and everyone in the society to create sustainable eco-solutions to problems impacted by climate change affecting people’s health in the environment.
