Governor of Katsina State, Aminu Masari, on Tuesday disclosed that 293,008 residents of the state had enrolled in the state Contributory Healthcare Scheme.
He said the residents joined the scheme within the last one year of its establishment.
The governor made the disclosure in Katsina during an event to mark the one year of the scheme’s inauguration in the state.
Masari observed that no society could achieve meaningful progress without adequate health care services and that was why his government made robust budgetary provisions for the health sector.
He added that according to a baseline assessment survey, an average Civil Servant in the state spent between 35% – 45% of his income on healthcare before the establishment of the scheme.
“Today, an average Civil Servant spends less than 3% of his income. In other words, access to healthcare services, particularly to the poor and vulnerable population in Katsina State, is guaranteed,” the governor said.
He added, “To date about 293,008 beneficiaries enrolled into the formal sector programme with 40,820
vulnerable population that are covered under the Basic training and re-training of staff of the Agency.”
The Governor observed that although the state commenced the scheme a year ago, Katsina State was recently honoured with the prestigious award as the best State Contributory Health Insurance Scheme of the year.
He declared, “Let me use this opportunity to assure the people of Katsina State that the present administration will continue to ensure the provision of qualitative, adequate and sustainable healthcare services across the State.
“I wish to call on all people residing in the State to enroll in this Scheme in order to benefit from the advantages available under the programme .”
The State Health Commissioner, Engineer Yakubu Danja,in his remarks at the occasion, said the state was investing heavily on the health sector to ensure that residents of the state have access to cheap and qualitative health care.
