A gas cylinder truck which exploded on Monday injured five persons and razed 22 houses and shops in the Babura Local Government Area of Jigawa State.
The Public Relations Officer, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, Jigawa Command, CSC Adamu Shehu, confirmed the incident in a statement on Tuesday.
He said the incident occurred when a truck laden with 25 gas cylinders exploded in the Babura LGA of the state, adding that no life was lost in the incident.
He said the driver of the truck refused to stop while being pursued by the operatives, resulting in one of the cylinders falling off the truck and exploding fire immediately.
According to him, the truck was coming from Tinkim town in the Magarya LGA of Niger Republic and was heading toward Hadejia LGA of Jigawa State when the incident happened.
He, however, noted that injured victims had been receiving medical attention at the general hospital in Babura.
Shehu said, “The tragedy occurred on Monday night, September 12, 2022, around 9pm. The firefighters were deployed from the Hadejia LGA to quench the fire. Five persons were injured and 17 shops and five houses were destroyed in the fire caused by the explosion.”
He also said the circumstances leading to the explosion were still sketchy, adding that details would be made available in due course.
