A woman, Happiness Liberty, has accused policemen attached to the Igando Police Division of the Lagos State Police Command of detaining and torturing her, her husband, and three children, including an 11-month-old baby.
Happiness, a resident of Igando in the Alimosho Local Government Area of the state, alleged that the police tortured them for four days, and kept them without food before their arraignment at the Magistrates’ Court.
She added that injuries were inflicted on her and her children, adding that the police arraigned the family to cover up for the torture.
The mother of three, while narrating the experience in an SOS message titled “Torture and illegal detention of my husband, his siblings myself and my children,” stated that the incident occurred on Sunday evening, September 11, 2022, when a commercial motorcyclist knocked down her husband.
Instead of apologising, the motorcyclist, one Martin A, who later identified himself as a policeman, slapped her husband.
She further alleged that her younger sister who was carrying an 11-month-old baby was also slapped by the policeman.
She said, “After beating, they arrested and detained my husband, his siblings, myself and my three children and 11 months old respectively. They didn’t allow us to make calls. They treated us like criminals.”
The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, said, “The entire family is at the police headquarters and the DPO and another officer involved are also here. The X-Squad Department of the command has commenced in-depth investigations”
