No fewer than six dead bodies were recovered from a boat that capsized in a river around Fada village, in the Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.
The boat, which capsized on Tuesday around 1pm, had 40 passengers on board.
The local boat was said to be conveying the passengers from the Guma LGA to Buruku LGA, Benue State.
About 26 people were said to have been rescued alive, while search was on for the remaining eight passengers.
The state police spokesperson, Catherine Anene, said efforts were being made to recover the missing passengers.
Anene said, “On September 20, 2022, at 1pm, a boat conveying 40 persons from Guma LGA to Buruku LGA for business capsized in the river around Fada village, Guma LGA.
“Combine efforts of the police and fishermen in the area led to the rescue of 26 persons, who were taken to hospital for treatment. Six corpses have been recovered, while a search for the remaining eight persons is ongoing.”
