Four hundred chess players are billed to participate in the 2022 National Chess Championships in Nigeria.
NCC 2022 will begin on the 3rd of October and last until the 9th of October, the organisers announced in a statement made available to The PUNCH on Sunday.
According to the statement, the event is hosted by the Orchid-Lekki Chess Club on behalf of the Nigeria Chess Federation.
As the top players battle for the top spot and the prestigious title of National Chess Champion, there will be other categories (Open) to accommodate chess players at all levels from around the country.
The upcoming chess championship will have an invitational section where the top ten rated male and female players will go head-to-head to determine Nigeria’s next national champions.
The more populated part of the championship will be the open section which will have a masters category, an open category and a junior category with Under 10, Under 14 and Under 20 tournaments.
Hundreds of children, teenagers and adolescents are expected to participate in these tournaments.
Secondary school students in Lagos State and Chess in Slum children are also expected to compete for prizes in the junior category.
Also, 3,000 visitors are expected to be present in the event which will take place at the same venue the championships took place in 2021, Orchid Hotel, Orchid Road, Lekki, Lagos.
