In an intriguing move that buzzed the professional boxing world, Nigerian-born US-based Enobong “The Nigerian Gentleman” Umohette on Saturday made a surprise return to pro boxing after almost eight years in retirement with a knockout win over Toledo Ohio’s hard-hitting William “Billy” Myers at the City of Ashland in the State of Kentucky.
Umohette, the former USA State of Wisconsin and Universal Boxing Federation International Heavyweight boxing champion, stunned the boxing community with a remarkable performance as he knocked out Myers in the third round to secure his 10th professional career win.
Speaking from his Wisconsin, United States base, Umohette thanked God for the victory and the opportunity to inspire other athletes.
The Nigerian Gentleman was led into battle by his team, which consisted of his manager Rhonda Yates, veteran boxing coaches Richard Mason and Fred LeGrandier, veteran heavyweight champion Jeremiah “The Beast” Williams, while promoter Erik Flemming and head coach George Offiong monitored proceedings remotely.
Responding to questions on Umohette’s almost eight-year hiatus and his surprise return, Offiong stated that Umohette was put through the most rigorous routine of health, medical and physical training tests, adding that the pugilist exceeded all benchmarks in endurance, speed, power, reflex, craft, ring generalship, techniques, tactics and stamina during a training camp that lasted several months.
