The police on Friday arraigned a 40-year-old man, Kayode Ayeni, at an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court over alleged possession of Indian hemp.
The defendant, of no fixed address, is standing trial on a charge of possession of hemp, according to the News Agency of Nigeria.
The prosecutor, Inspector Bamikole Olasunkanmi, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on October 21 at about 10p.m in Ado-Ekiti.
He alleged that the defendant had in his possession weeds suspected to be hemp.
Olasunkanmi said that the offence contravened section 5 (b) of the Indian Hemp Act 1966. He urged the court to adjourn the case to enable him to study the file and assemble his witnesses.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against him.
Counsel to the defendant, Mr Tunmise Akinwunmi, urged the court to grant his client bail, with a promise that he would not jump bail.
The Chief Magistrate, Mr Michael Faola, granted the defendant bail for N100,000 with one surety in like sum. He adjourned the case until November 21 for hearing.
