A specialist hospital in Minimally Invasive Surgery, Kelina Hospital, Lagos, has said the availability of ultra-modern surgical specialist hospitals in Nigeria will reverse brain drain and capital flight.
Speaking at the unveiling of Kelina Hospital, the Chief Medical Director of Kelina Hospital, Dr Celsus Undie, said the new surgical care facility would be a solution to brain drain and capital flight in Nigeria.
‘‘There are surgeons outside the country who are always getting in touch with us that they want to practise here and we have been allowing them in as much as they have licences. So, it can solve the issues of brain drain and capital flight. With this, Nigerians will not need to travel out for their surgeries but can have them done here in Nigeria with the same equipment used in advanced countries and the same medical expertise.’’
Undie who is a Consultant Urologist explained that in addition to world-class surgical facilities, the hospital also has a world-class Laboratory that is very fast and can return results for over 90% of tests in less than three hours.
‘‘In the last three years, Kelina Hospital Abuja has done over 500 minimal-access surgeries with a 100% success rate. More than 90% of our urological procedures are minimally invasive and it accounts for most of the surgeries done at Kelina Hospital if all departments are put together.’’
In his speech, The Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, noted that the hospital would offer what he described as “Smart Surgery” adding that the patients could go home the same day after major surgery without a blood transfusion.
“The hospital’s equipment is world-class standards. I am particular about the huge prostates prevalent in Nigeria, which are best treated with the Holmium Laser or HoLEP which ensures less bleeding.’’
Also speaking, the Olubadan of Ibadan, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Mohood Balogun, Ali Okunmade 11, was full of praise for the hospital as he gave his royal blessings.
The Radiology Suite has a brand new 32 Slice CT, digital X-ray machine, and high-resolution ultrasound scanner.
The new hospital which specialises in minimally invasive surgeries is equipped, with 4k equipment for endoscopic Minimally Invasive Surgery. Some of these pieces of equipment are the first of their kind in Nigeria.
