There was wild jubilation across Osun State on Friday, as the Supreme Court in Abuja declared Governor Adegboyega Oyetola as the winner of September 22 gubernatorial election in the state.
DAILY POST reports that the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Senator Ademola Adeleke had challenged the verdict of an appellate court of May 9, which declared Oyetola as the winner of the contest.
Recall that the election tribunal on March 23 ruled in favour of Adeleke as the winner of the contest, making it imperative for Oyetola and the APC to contest the judgement at the Appeal court.
Meanwhile, hundreds of APC faithful as well as well wishers on Friday besieged major cities in the state to celebrate the legal triumph.
Our Correspondents observed a large crowd of APC members in Osogbo, the state capital, as well as Ikirun, Ile-ife, Gbongan, Iwo among others, dancing and expressing profound joy over the development.
In the same vein, a sociopolitical group, Osun Concerned Citizens has declared the ruling as a victory for democracy and justice.
This was contained in a press release signed by the General Secretary of the group, Comrade Yahaya Ademola, and made available to newsmen in Osogbo.
Ademola said the months of legal tussle between the ruling APC and PDP served as a big distraction for the APC-led government to the detriment of common citizens who are looking up to the government for solace.
“Now that the battle is over, Governor Gboyega Oyetola should be magnanimous in victory and make use of the best hands, irrespective of Political Party affiliation, for delivery of continuity dividend, in clear knowledge that after all, we are first and foremost Osun Citizens before political affiliation.
“Those who lost the legal battle should make themselves available for the bigger project of Osun Development while preparing for future elections.
“Osun Concerned Citizens stands for Democracy and Justice. The Supreme Court Judgement has vindicated our loudly expressed opinion with finality, and reaffirmed the faith of the people in the Judiciary. People are hereby enjoined to go about their normal duties as Governor Gboyega Oyetola drives us to the next level of continuity in Social and infrastructural Development”, the statement read.
